Globe’s Joe G

Have you seen vid’s like Somewhere Everywhere Anywhere, Secret Machine and skate vid Hallowed Ground? The man behind this magic goes by the name Joe G and has a rare talent of fitting the freshest music to any section he produces. He’s worked for Poor Specimen and right now works for Globe as the Director Of Film Television & New Media. Ripe Surfing threw a few questions his way to pick his brain…

Ripe: What bands have been catching your ear lately
Joe G: So many good bands it’s hard to say. Today I’m listening to Health, The Black Angels, Black Mountain, A Place To Bury Strangers and Devo.

How long have you been with Globe and how did you get the job?
Been working with Globe for about 6 years now. Wow, thats a long time! I got the job because Brian “Ruby” Robbins, the Globe surf marketing manager wanted to get a surf flick going for Globe. They had never done one and they liked the stuff i had done at Poor Specimen.

…and of course Kelly was otherworldly as usual. Nothing quite like watching Kelly surf Tavarua or Restaurants. Amazing Stuff!

How was the Fiji event, who were the stand-outs in the free surfing sessions?
Fiji was amazing. The Hobgoods always go bananas there and are really fun to watch. CJ especially impressed me this year, surfing better than I’ve seen him surf in a long time. Taj and Bobby were absolutely ripping as well and of course Kelly was otherworldly as usual. Nothing quite like watching Kelly surf Tavarua or Restaurants. Amazing Stuff

Will anyone contest slater for the 08 crown?
Uhhh, don’t think so.

You’ve always got some great tunes to accompany your videos, what has been your favourite section combination so far?
That’s a tough one. I work really hard on pairing music to the piece we’re going to put it to so I usually end up loving each one in a different way. Of all the films, I’ve been most happy with the musical pairings in Secret Machine. The second indo part of Taj, Yadin, CJ, Damo and Noodles set to Arcade Fire is one of my favourites for sure. I was also really psyched on how New Emissions of Light & Sound came out. DJ Sasha scored the entire soundtrack and it’s just cruisy and trippy and different. Good fun.

Do you have a favourite song that you would love to put to a surfer but wouldn’t be able to get the clearance?
I love Bowie! We tried to clear a song of his for the Oz freesurf part in Secret Machine and got denied. I was shattered.

What have you got in the works at the moment?
I’ve been mostly doing Skate stuff for Globe for the last 12 months or so but we’re about to start a big new surf film project. I’m super excited about it but it probably won’t be done for a few years. The next thing I have coming out is episode 4 of United By Fate (the skate film series I’m doing for Globe). It’s Greg Lutzka’s episode and he’s an absolute madman so it’ll be a good one if you dig skate stuff. You can watch it for free after August 15th at globe.tv.

What websites do you regularly check out for inspiration?
Too many. There are so many sites out there that get you excited to go out there and make something. Dion Agius is always sending me great stuff from Vimeo. But honestly i get the most inspiration from old books on art, film and design. Something about touching pages is still pretty sweet.
